Always Good Ships: Histories of Newport News Ships
by William A. Fox
Williamsburg, VA — When Collis P. Huntington elected to build a shipyard in 1886 to serve the world’s greatest harbor, he determined that it should be known the world over for the quality of its products. In 1916, this business philosophy was distilled by then shipyard president Homer L. Ferguson for the so-called Shipyard Monument. This specified for his shipbuilders in no uncertain terms that there should be no scrimping on the product—profit or loss should be minor considerations as long
as Good Ships were the result. Always Good Ships was originally published in 1986 for Newport News Shipbuilding’s 100th anniversary. This 125th anniversary edition incorporates some design changes, but its format is basically the same as the original. A total of thirty new ships (seven aircraft carriers, seventeen submarines, and six tankers) have been added, and the histories of approximately 150 have been updated. The revisions include the sad loss of some favorites (SS America, USS America, and the tug Huntington) tempered by the stubborn survival of others (cargo ship Medina, tug Bath, cable ship Joseph Henry, ferry Binghamton, SS United States, and the battleship Texas). A testament to their quality, some of the survivors are still afloat into their second century.
This 8.5” x 11” volume with four-color and black and white photographs depicts 530 Newport News ships.
William A. Fox, born in Newport News, has dedicated much of his life to his all-consuming enthusiasm for the
sea and ships; not only as a hobby, but in the production of books and scholarly articles on various facets of
shipping and shipbuilding.
