History of BayPort Credit Union
Organized as Newport News Shipbuilding and Dry Dock Co. Employees' Credit Union in 1928 to serve the financial needs of Shipyard employees and their families, BayPort Credit Union now serves as a community-chartered credit union for the greater Hampton Roads area. BayPort Credit Union's history spans eight decades, playing a significant role in the growth, security and well-being of the Virginia peninsula and the surrounding community.

Our members have not only built ships over the years, but, with credit union backing, they have built homes, raised families, educated their children and enjoyed a higher standard of living than would have otherwise been possible.
BayPort has a strong legacy in the credit union industry as well. In 1953, officers of our state-chartered credit union were responsible for the organization of the Hampton Roads Chapter of the Virginia Credit Union League. Our volunteers and employees continue their supporting efforts by serving on committees and as officers and directors on both the local and state levels. We actively support state and national legislative actions affecting the credit union movement.

With thirteen branch locations, employees are encouraged to give back to their local communities through volunteer service. As a result, BayPort employees volunteer more than 2,000 hours supporting community causes across the entire greater Hampton Roads area.

With 93,000 members and over $1 billion in assets, our purpose and philosophy remain true to the credit union motto of "people helping people" by promoting thrift, encouraging savings, and providing a source of credit at reasonable rates.
